SYMPTOMS

When a driver is stopped and restarted in a tight loop, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 may stop responding (hang) and you may receive a Stop 0x00000050 error message on a blue screen after a few hours.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you are using the skeleton Driver Development Kit (DDK) driver sample that is included on the Windows NT 4.0 DDK. There appears to be a race condition when the driver registers the device object and the symbolic link on startup in conjunction with the user mode management program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, create the symbolic link during driver startup before you register the device object. When you do this, the race condition is avoided.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
