Visio2000: Error Message: Visio32.exe Is Not a Valid Win32 Application (285982)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Visio, you may receive the following error message:
Visio32.exe is Not a Valid Win32 Application

CAUSE

This problem may occur if your Visio executable file (Visio32.exe) is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, rename the Visio executable file (Visio32.exe), and then reinstall Visio.

Rename the Visio32.exe File

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders. (In Microsoft Windows 2000, click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.)
  2. Type visio32.exe.
  3. In the Look in list, click the letter of your hard disk.
  4. Click to select the Include subfolders check box, and then click Find Now. (In Windows 2000, just click Search Now).
  5. When the file has been found, right-click the file name, and then click Rename on the shortcut menu.
  6. Rename the file to "Visio32.old" (without the quotation marks).
  7. If you are prompted with a warning message, click Yes.

Repair or Reinstall Visio

The Microsoft Visio CD-ROM contains the Visio executable file in the following folder:

\Install\bin\Program Files\Visio

Copy the Visio32.exe file from the CD-ROM and paste it in your Visio program folder (typically C:\Program files\Visio), or follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click either Microsoft Visio 2000 or Visio 2000, and then click Add/Remove.

    NOTE: In Windows 2000, click Change.
  4. After the Visio Installation Manager initialization is finished, click Next.
  5. In the Setup Operation dialog box, click Reinstall/Repair, and then click Next twice.
After the Visio Installation Manager is finished, you can run Visio without receiving the error message described in this article.
