FIX: Changing Autostart Options for Named Instances Change Autostart Settings for the Default Instance (285979)

SYMPTOMS

Using SQL Enterprise Manager (SEM), when you change the autostart option for the SQL Server service of a named instance, the server incorrectly changes the autostart option for the SQL Server service of the default instance instead. Also, if you view the autostart option for the SQL Server service in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager, the default instance and named instances always have the same value, regardless of the actual settings. This problem also applies to the autostart option for the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) service, but does not apply to the SQL Agent service.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

Instead of changing or viewing the autostart option in SEM, change or view the autostart option by using one of the following tools:

SQL Server Service Manager
Services in Control Panel

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.
