PRJ2000: A Resource Incorrectly Appears to Be Overallocated (285728)

CAUSE

This problem can occur because of the difference in the way that Microsoft Project 2000 stores the maximum available units for a resource (these are stored in the Max Units resource field) and the resource assignment units for individual tasks.

For example, a resource may have a Max Units value of 70%, which is stored in the Max Units field as a whole number. Conversely, assignment unit values are stored internally as a decimal value. If the resource is assigned at a Units value of 35% to each of two tasks that are scheduled for the same time, the internally stored decimal values of the assignments may be slightly higher than 35% (for example, 35.00000001% and 35.00000002%). When these two numbers are added together, they exceed 70%. Microsoft Project 2000 displays this as an overallocation in views such as the Resource Sheet view or the Resource Usage view.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1).

To temporarily work around this problem, reduce the units for the resource, so that the units do not exceed the resource's maximum units for a task or combination of tasks. To do this, follow these steps:

Select the task that you want to change.
On the Project menu, click Task Information.
On the Resources tab, type the new value for units in the Units field for the resource.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
