After you install Microsoft Windows 2000 on a computer that has a 3Com Megahertz 3CCM156 56K Global Modem, you may discover that although the modem is detected and appears to be correctly installed, it does not function.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because this device is not actually compatible with Windows 2000.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, remove the device from the computer, using the Add/Remove Hardware tool in Control Panel, and replace it with a modem that is listed on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). You can view this list at: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspxMORE INFORMATION
The 3Com Megahertz 3CCM156 56K Global Modem is an OEM product licensed to Dell Computer Corporation, where it is modified for use in Dell Latitude CPi computers. The modifications include changing the FlashROM on the modem, which makes the modem incompatible both with 3Com's drivers and with the drivers available with Windows 2000. Dell does not currently support this device under Windows 2000, and 3Com cannot provide drivers for an OEM product.
