Asian text font box is blank in the Font dialog box in PowerPoint 2002 or PowerPoint 2003 (285452)

This article was previously published under Q285452 SYMPTOMS When you click Font on the Format menu, the Asian text font box appears empty (no
default font type appears).
This behavior occurs after you select
English (Hong Kong SAR), or English (Singapore) as the selected text in the Language dialog box.
You expect the SimSun or MS Mincho font to
appear, as it does in Microsoft Word. CAUSE This behavior occurs on a computer that has the English
(U.S.) language installed as the regional language. PowerPoint is designed to
not enable composite fonts unless the currently installed language requires
composite fonts.
An example of a regional language with composite
fonts is English (Hong Kong SAR).
This behavior may also occur with
other non-composite regional languages such as German or French. RESOLUTION To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
- In PowerPoint, select the text that you want to
format.
- On the Format menu, click Font.
- In the Font dialog box, click the arrow next to the Asian text
font box.
- Select the font that you want, such as SimSun, and then click OK.
NOTE: If you want to use composite fonts, you need to install a
language with composite fonts. In Microsoft Windows, you can install additional
languages on your computer with the Regional Options tool in Control Panel.
