PPT2002: Objects Change Size or Position When You Switch Between Programs with ALT+TAB (285442)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2002

This article was previously published under Q285442

SYMPTOMS

If you are modifying a Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 presentation, and you use the ALT+TAB key combination to switch to another program or another presentation, when you switch back to the first presentation, the size or position of the last object that you edited may have changed. Or, the size or position of that object may shift the first time that you click your mouse inside the presentation.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you press ALT+TAB while you hold down the mouse button and select an object sizing handle or moving handle.

When you switch to another program or presentation while you hold down the mouse button, PowerPoint changes the size or position of the selected object according to your mouse movements while you are working in that other program or presentation.

If you switch to another PowerPoint presentation and perform any action, the object is already changed when you switch back to your original presentation.

If you switch to another program, such as Microsoft Word 2002, when you switch back to your presentation, PowerPoint behaves as if the mouse button is still depressed, and you see a moving or resizing marquee when you move your mouse. When you click anything on your slide, the shape or position of the object that you selected before pressing ALT+TAB is changed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, release the mouse button before you switch to a new presentation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
