You Are Prompted for User Credential When You Run the SFC Utility (285152)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the System File Checker (SFC) utility (Sfc.exe) to scan for changes on the computer, you are prompted for logon credentials to access the i386 share even though you are currently logged on to the computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the server that hosts the i386 share is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. The SFC utility runs under the computer security context. When the SFC utility attempts to access the i386 share, the Windows NT 4.0-based server does not know how to authenticate computer accounts. Therefore, the administrator is prompted for credentials. This problem does not occur when the i386 share is hosted on Windows 2000-based servers.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, apply a NullSessionShares setting. This setting enables access to the computer account. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
