256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

SUMMARY

This article describes the functionality of the IRPStackSize parameter in Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

MORE INFORMATION

IRPStackSize specifies the number of stack locations in I/O request packets (IRPs) used by Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003. You may have to increase this number for certain transports, MAC drivers, or file system drivers. Each stack uses 36 bytes of memory for each receive buffer. This value is set in the following registry location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters

In Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003, the default value of IRPStackSize is 15, and the range is from 11 to 32.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
If the key is not present, you can use Registry Editor to add it. To do this, follow these steps:

  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Expand the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
