SYMPTOMS

After upgrading to Windows 2000 Professional on a computer running Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with the MS Fax Service installed, you may find that the Fax Service is missing, although the files still exist on the hard disk.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, manually install the service by using the Service Control utility (Sc.exe) from the Windows 2000 Resource Kit.

MORE INFORMATION

Service Control (sc.exe) is a command-line utility that allows you to query, start, stop, install, and remove services locally or remotely. Follow these steps to install the Fax Service:
  1. Install the resource kit, and then locate the Sc.exe file.
  2. Start Command Prompt, and then type the following and press ENTER:

sc create fax binpath= c:\winnt\system32\faxsvc.exe Displayname= "Fax Service"

Note: If the \Winnt\System32 directory is installed to a different partition or drive letter, substitute that drive letter for c:.
  3. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
  4. Click Services and Applications, click Services, and then double-click Fax Service.
  5. Click Log On, and click to select the Allow service to interact with desktop check box.
  6. Click OK, right-click Fax Service, and click Start.
After you finish the upgrade, you may notice that the following Fax Service files are present on the computer:

The registry entries for the Fax Service are found at HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Fax and HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Fax.

This situation is different from the common mistake of installing the service but not enabling it. When there is no fax device present, the Fax Service is not enabled and the Fax tool does not appear in the Control Panel. In the case of a Windows 2000 installation, the service itself, which is installed by default, is missing.
