XL97: SR-2: "Incomplete Calculation" Error When You Open File Linked to Exported Access Table (283861)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q283861
NOTE: This issue only applies to Excel 97 SR-2; it does not apply to earlier versions.

SYMPTOMS

If you export a table from Microsoft Access 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2) to Microsoft Excel format, and then link from a new file to the resulting workbook, when you open the linked workbook and update links, you receive the following error message:
filename contains incomplete calculation.

CAUSE

This error message occurs due to a problem with the Excel indexed sequential access method (ISAM) driver that is included with Microsoft Office 97 SR-2.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, open the exported Excel file in Excel, press CTRL+ALT+F9 to recalculate, and then save the file. You can now open the linked file without errors.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem is scheduled to be corrected in a future version of the ISAM driver.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem exhibits the same symptoms as described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

179588 ACC: "Incomplete Calculation" Error Opening Linked Microsoft Excel File

However, the cause in this case is different. In this case, there is no link to the Access database, and there should be no need to calculate the workbook. The ISAM driver is writing the Excel file incorrectly.
