MCIS 2.5 HMI Causes ASP Error Due to Heap Access Violation (283816)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Commercial Internet System 2.5

This article was previously published under Q283816

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) 2.5 HTML Mail Interface (HMI) fails and returns ASP error messages. Internet Explorer clients that are running HMI WebMail return the following error message:
error 'ASP 0115'
Unexpected error
/email/Messages.asp
A trappable error occurred in an external object. The script cannot continue running.
The MCIS 2.5 HMI server logs the following events in the Application event log:
Asp 5 error; Unexpected error
NOTE: The exact page where the failure occurs may differ, but the problem always occurs on a page that uses the HMI Rendering object.

CAUSE

The HMI COM object, Renobj.dll, attempts to allocate local heap for processing Web mail. In some cases, a large enough buffer is not allocated. This can result in an Access Violation error message if the subsequent heap header information is damaged.
