XADM: Status Reported as 'Unknown' When You Access ExchangeServerState WMI Class (283289)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the ExchangeServerState WMI class on an Exchange 2000 computer to access Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) information, the status of the systems that are being monitored may be displayed as Unknown.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because the ExchangeServerState WMI class accesses the system attendant (MAD) monitoring thread that is run by the System Attendant service on the Exchange 2000 computer. The monitoring thread only monitors information that is specified for each server in Exchange System Manager. By default, only services are monitored on the Exchange 2000 computer; all other monitoring objects in the ExchangeServerState WMI class are displayed as Unknown. For example, if all Exchange 2000 services are disabled on an Exchange 2000 front-end server, including System Attendant, none of the default Exchange services that are monitored are available, so they are displayed as Unknown.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, enable additional objects to be monitored:
  1. Start Exchange System Manager.
  2. Click to expand Tools, and then click to expand the Monitoring and Status folder.
  3. Click the Status folder, right-click a server in the right pane, and then click Properties.

    NOTE: By default, only services are monitored on the Exchange 2000 computer.
  4. Click Add, click the resource that you want to add, and then configure the appropriate thresholds.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Configure all the resources that you want to monitor.
  7. Complete this procedure for each server
