SYMPTOMS

When you try to send a message with an attachment, you may receive the following error message:
The message could not be sent because its size exceeded the server limit. You can use the option located in Tools/Accounts/Properties/Advanced to break the message into smaller parts.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because your Internet service provider (ISP) has a maximum size limit for attachments and your message exceeds that limit.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you can set Outlook to break large messages into multiple parts in a Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) account. The recipient of the message must have an e-mail client or software that can re-assemble the message. Use the following steps to break large messages into multiple parts:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  2. On the Mail tab, click your POP3 account, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Advanced tab, click to select the Break apart messages larger than <xx> KB check box in the Sending box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods to send messages without breaking them into multiple parts:
  • Zip or compress the file with a third-party program before you attach it to the message.

    -or-

  • When you scan or create a document or graphic, adjust the options so that the file is smaller.

    -or-

  • Post the picture or graphic on a Web site and then send the recipient the link to the site.
