SYMPTOMS

If you upgrade a computer that is configured with a Japanese PS/2 Keyboard (106/109 Key) keyboard to Microsoft Windows XP, when the upgrade is complete, Device Manager indicates that the keyboard is the Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 keyboard. The keyboard functions as a 106 layout, but Device Manager shows it as 101.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Plug and Play detection is not aware of the keyboard type that a user installs manually. PS/2 keyboards have no definitive method for enumeration, and almost all of them show up in Device Manager as a Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 keyboard.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, reinstall the Japanese PS/2 Keyboard (106/109 Key) keyboard by using the Keyboard option in the Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
