WD2002: Change Not Applied to Numbered Items in Table (282543)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to change a numbered sequence of items in table rows, the sequence is incorrectly changed.

NOTE: This problem can occur with either a numbered list or an outline numbered list.

For example, when you have a numbered sequence of items in table rows, as in the following example

1. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
2. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
3. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
4. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
5. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.


when you change the first numbered item to a lettered item, the remaining items of the numbered sequence are renumbered, not changed to a lettered sequence.

a. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
1. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
2. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
3. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
4. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.


CAUSE

This problem with the AutoFormat feature occurs when there are no paragraph marks in the table cells that contain the numbered sequence.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the numbered sequence. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click into a numbered item in one of the table rows.
  2. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Click to select a different numbering format.

      -or-
    • With the number format selected, click Customize. In the Customize Numbered List dialog box, change the Number style box to the style that you want, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
