SYMPTOMS

When you install Windows Media Services on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 backup domain controller or a Windows 2000 Server domain controller that is not a primary tree in the forest, Windows Media Services may display an error message stating that certain services failed to install. And when the setup is complete, Windows Media does function properly on the server.

You may receive an error message similar to one of the following:

Event Source:Service Control Manager
Event Category:None

Date:2/6/2002
Time:6:29:14 PM
User:N/A

Description:
The Windows Media Station Service service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not start due to a logon failure.

User:N/A

CAUSE

This problem is due to account replication between the domain controllers. Account information is still stored on the primary domain controller. During the installation process, when Setup tries to create the NetShowServices account and the NetShowAdministrators group, the installation fails because the accounts are not replicated in time.

WORKAROUND

On Windows NT 4.0, you can specify a separate account for the services to run under. This is not an option when installing on Windows 2000.

Microsoft recommends that you do not install Windows Media Services on either a Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 domain controller.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
