SYMPTOMS

When try to delete or move a Hotmail message while you are working offline, you may receive the following error message:
You Must Be Online in Order to Perform This Operation.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Hotmail support in Outlook does not support the deleting or moving of messages between Hotmail folders while you are working offline. When you work offline, you can read messages that you have downloaded, and compose new messages that can you can send the next time that you are online.

You can move Hotmail messages that you have downloaded between a Hotmail folder and a Personal Folders (.pst) file. After you move the Hotmail message to a Personal Folders (.pst) file, you may receive the following error message:
Can't move the items. The item could not be moved. It was either already removed or deleted, access was denied or the server was unavailable.
This error message occurs when Outlook tries to delete the message from the Hotmail folder after the message was copied to your Personal Folders (.pst) file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, click Work Offline on the File menu, and then try to delete or move a Hotmail message.

MORE INFORMATION

Outlook is performing correctly. Currently, Outlook does not have the ability to delete or move messages on the Hotmail server.
