IntelliPoint: Cannot configure mouse buttons or settings (281305)

This article was previously published under Q281305 SYMPTOMS When you install the Microsoft IntelliPoint software,
version 3.2 on any of the above operating systems, you may experience any of
the following symptoms:
- The Device section in the IntelliPoint settings may be blank.
- You may not be able to change the button assignments or
settings.
- Both the Left Button and the Right Button options default to the Click setting.
- The mouse icon may not appear in the System Tray on the
Windows taskbar.
CAUSE This behavior can occur if the Msmouse.vxd file is not
updated correctly. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, install version 11.30.484 of the
Msmouse.vxd file. To do this, use the appropriate method for your version of
Microsoft Windows. Microsoft Windows 98- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type msmouse.vxd.
- In the Look in box, click My Computer.
- Click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, right-click the Msmouse.vxd file that is located in the C:\Windows\System folder, and then
click Properties.
- Click the Version tab.
- Note the version of the Msmouse.vxd file, and then click OK.
- Insert the IntelliPoint software CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or
DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to
prevent the CD-ROM from starting automatically.
Note If you downloaded and installed version 3.2 of the IntelliPoint
software from the Microsoft Web site, use a .zip file compression utility such
as NicoMak WinZip or the Compressed Folders feature in Microsoft Plus! 98 to
extract the contents of the installation file to a temporary Ip3_2 folder on
the hard disk. For information about how to do this, see the "More Information"
section in this article. - Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type sfc, and then click OK.
- Click Extract one file from installation
disk.
- In the Specify the system file you would like to
restore box, type msmouse.vxd, and then click Start.
- In the Restore from box, type the
appropriate line for your installation source, and then click OK:
IntelliPoint CD-ROM: cdrom:\Ip3_2\Setup\Drivers\Win9xDrv
IntelliPoint 3.2 Download File: where cdrom is the drive letter of
your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. - In the Save file in box, type the
following line, and then click OK: where drive is the drive letter of the
hard disk on which Microsoft Windows is installed.
- When you are prompted to back up the file, click OK.
Note If you are prompted to create a folder, click Yes. - Click OK, and then click Close.
- Restart the computer.
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)- Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
- In the Search for Files and Folders Named
box, type msmouse.vxd.
- In the Look In box, click My Computer, and then click Search.
- In the list of found files, right-click the Msmouse.vxd file that is located in the C:\Windows\System folder, and then
click Properties.
- Click the Version tab.
- Note the version of the Msmouse.vxd file, and then click OK.
- Insert the IntelliPoint software CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or
DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to
prevent the CD-ROM from starting automatically.

Note If you are prompted to create a folder, click Yes. - Click OK, and then click Close.
- Restart the computer.
If you still cannot change the settings, make sure the
Msmouse.vxd file is version 11.30.484. Windows NT 4.0- Log on as an administrator
- The file msmouse.vxd should be located in c:\winnt\system, but it may be missing or be in the incorrect version.
- If the file is missing, you can find it on the IntelliPoint
3.2 CD or from the IntelliPoint 3.2 software download from the internet
(eng.exe).
Note If you downloaded the file from the internet, you have to
extract the files to a new folder (....\eng\IPfilter\msmouse.vxd). - If the file does not exist in c:\winnt\system then copy the
file <CD-ROM drive letter>:\SETUP\IPfilter\msmouse.vxd to c:\winnt\system
- If the file does exist at all, verify that it is version
11.30.484. If it is not, delete the file, and then copy the file msmouse.vxd from <CD-ROM drive letter>:\SETUP\IPfilter\msmouse.vxd to
the c:\winnt\system folder.
- Restart the computer.
