To restore the Outlook icon to your desktop, remove the registry value that prevents the Windows Installer from re-installing the Outlook icon. To do this:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the registry value to delete:

    1. On Windows 98, find the registry value DesktopShortcutAsIs under the following key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Setup

    2. On Windows 2000, find the registry value W2kDesktopShortcutAsIs under the following key:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Setup

  4. Click the value, and then press DELETE.
  5. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
  6. Click Start, point to Run, and type:

    <drive:>\setup.exe ADDLOCAL="OUTLOOKNonBootFiles"

(where <drive:> is the letter of your CD-ROM drive or network share path)
  7. Click OK.
The Windows Installer runs and installs the Outlook icon after Outlook starts. The Windows Installer may prompt you for your installation CD-ROM if the Office/Outlook CD is not in the drive.
