OL2002: Some Mouseover Events May Appear Disabled with a Color Setting of 256 or Less (281041)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q281041

SYMPTOMS

When you move your mouse pointer over an item on the screen, properties of that object may change in recognition of the mouse position without you selecting the object. These changes may be a change in the color of the text, a text box appearing that describes the object, a drop down menu appears, or other property changes.

This programming feature is referred to as a "Mouseover" event that many programmers and Web page designers are using to enhance their user interface in their program by visually responding to the position of the mouse.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Mouseover event cannot change the display characteristics of some objects because of the reduced color settings of the video drivers in this mode. Menu options are available for you to select, but the color or shading changes are not displayed.

RESOLUTION

This behavior, at the lower resolution, is a known limitation that cannot be programmed around. It does not allow enough color choices for the Mouseover event to change a screen object properties. The menus that may appear are active, but due to the video setting, the change in colors or shading that the Mouseover event triggers do not appear in the reduced color mode.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, select a higher number of colors for your resolution setting (for example, above 256 colors) in your Display settings to see the Mouseover events in Outlook 2002.

MORE INFORMATION

In Outlook 2002, there are some display features that appear on the screen that are based on the position of your mouse pointer (Mouseover events). Some color properties or additional functions may appear. In a reduced color mode setting, 256 colors or less, some items may appear to be disabled (grayed out) while you are using Outlook 2002.

This same visual effect may also appear in Outlook 2002 while you are using a Microsoft Windows 2000 Terminal Services Client computer. By default, a lower color resolution is set for the efficient transfer of screen data and information while you use the RDP protocol that is used in a Terminal Services session.
