This article was previously published under Q280921

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Microsoft Outlook 98 to Microsoft Office XP or Outlook 2002, the Outlook 98 Security Patch is not removed and still appears in the Windows list of currently installed programs.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Outlook 98 Security Patch does not need to be uninstalled. You can leave it on your system and Outlook 2002 will function normally.

The following situations occur if you remove the Outlook 98 Security Patch:
  • Outlook 2002 displays the error that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

287570 You Receive Error Message for an Installed Program

Follow the steps in the article to resolve the conflict.
  • The Cdo.dll file is restored. If the Collaborative Data Objects (CDO) component was not installed with Outlook 2002, there are some security implications that should be considered. Please see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article to decide if this component is needed:

    291169 General Information About CDO

The previous situations occur because removing the Outlook 98 Security Patch restores the following files that were patched during its installation:

   Cdo.dll
   Mapi32.dll
   Emsmdb32.dll
   Mspst32.dll
   Emsabp32.dll
   Emsui32.dll

NOTE: The last four files listed will remain in the <windows>\System folder, but will not interfere with Outlook 2002.
