XCON: How to Move an Exchange 2000-based Server Between Routing Groups (280701)

A routing group is a collection of Exchange-based servers that have full-time, reliable connections. Messages that are sent between any two servers in a routing group go directly from source to destination. Routing groups are not visible in Exchange System Manager by default.

To move a server from one routing group to another, drag and drop the server from the Members folder of the old routing group to the Members folder of the new routing group.

NOTE: To move servers between routing groups, the routing groups must be in the same administrative group. You cannot move servers between routing groups that are in different administrative groups when the Exchange 2000 Organization is in mixed mode. However, when the organization is in native mode, you can move servers between routing groups that span administrative groups.

You cannot move a server to another routing group if one or more of its virtual servers is a bridgehead server for connectors in its current routing group. To move a bridgehead server between routing groups, you must first remove the connectors from the server.

How to Move a Server Between Two Routing Groups

1. On the Start menu, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
2. Use the following path to expand the Members folder in the destination routing group:

   System Manager\Administrative Groups\Administrative Group name\Routing Groups\Routing Group name\Members

   NOTE: If the administrative groups or the routing groups are not visible, right-click the top-level object in Exchange System Manager, and then click Properties. Click to select the Display routing groups check box or the Display administrative groups check box.
   
   
3. Use the following path to expand the source Members container (that currently contains the server):

   System Manager\Administrative Groups\Administrative Group name\Routing Groups\Routing Group name\Members

4. In the Details pane of the source Members object, click the server that you want to move.
5. Drag the server to the Members folder in the new routing group.

NOTE: You can only add servers to routing groups during installation. Every server in your organization is added to a routing group by default. After installation, you can move servers between routing groups to put servers with reliable connections in the same routing group.
