WD2000: Modified Date/Time May Not Be Updated on Read/Write CD-ROM (280666)

SYMPTOMS

After you make changes to a document on a formatted Read/Write CD-ROM, the Modified date/time may not be updated when the document is saved. The Modified date/time may remain the same as the Created date/time.

To view the Modified date/time or Created date/time attributes of your document, do one of the following:
  • With the document open in Microsoft Word, click Properties on the File menu, and then view the General tab.

    -or-
  • In Microsoft Windows Explorer (right-click My Computer and then click Explore on the shortcut menu that appears), locate your document. Right-click your document, click Properties on the shortcut menu, and then view the General tab.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this problem, do one of the following:

Method 1: Make Changes on Your Hard Disk

  1. In Microsoft Windows Explorer (right-click My Computer and then click Explore on the shortcut menu that appears), locate your document. Right-click your document and drag it to the My Documents folder on your local hard disk (or a shared folder on a network drive). On the shortcut menu that appears, click Copy.
  2. In Microsoft Word, click Open on the File menu, and then open the document from the folder that you copied to in step 1.
  3. Make the changes that you want to the document.
  4. On the File menu, click Save to save the changes to the document located in the My Documents folder or the shared network folder.
  5. On the File menu, click Close.
  6. In Microsoft Windows Explorer, locate your document in the My Documents folder or shared network folder. Right-click your document and drag it to the CD-ROM drive. On the shortcut menu that appears, click Copy.

Method 2: Save the Document with a New File Name

  1. On the File menu, click Open and open the document located on the CD-ROM.
  2. After you make changes to your document, click Save As on the File menu, and save your document with a new file name.
NOTE: After you save your document with a new file name on the CD-ROM, you will have a second version of the document on the CD-ROM.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
