Status of Exchange Event Source Is Displayed as "Unknown" (280665)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Mobile Information 2001 Server

This article was previously published under Q280665

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Exchange 2000 System Manager snap-in for Mobile Information Server, when you view the status of the Exchange Event Source component on the Device Mobility Interconnect (DMI) server, the status is displayed as "Unknown."

When you view the status of the Exchange Event Source from a server that is running Exchange 2000, the status is displayed correctly. In addition, you are able to start and stop the Exchange Event Source by right-clicking the service in the System Manager snap-in. However, you are unable to do this on the DMI server.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Mobile Information Server Setup program did not register the Wnotify.dll file that is responsible for monitoring the Exchange Event Source through the Mobile Information Server Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. On the server that is running Exchange 2000 and the Mobile Information Server Exchange Event Source component, copy the following file, and then add the file to the DMI server in the respective folder:

    X:\Program Files\MMIS\Wnotify.dll

  2. On the DMI server, start a command prompt, and then change to X:\Program Files\MMIS.
  3. Run the following command line:

    regsvr32 wnotify.dll

The following message is then displayed:

    DllRegister Server in wnotify.dll succeeded.

  4. Start the Mobile Information Server System Manager snap-in. The Exchange Event Source status now displays correctly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Mobile Information 2001 Server.
