SYMPTOMS

When you have multiple documents open in a Microsoft Office program, and you press ALT+TAB to switch to another document, there is one more document icon displayed than there are open documents.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you have the Windows in Taskbar option selected on the View tab of the Options dialog box. When you select the Windows in Taskbar option, each document is displayed as a separate icon on the Windows taskbar, and the additional icon represents the currently active document.

MORE INFORMATION

The Windows in Taskbar option can be selected or cleared in each Office program by following these steps:
  1. Click Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click the View tab.
  3. Select or clear the Windows in Taskbar option.
  4. Click OK.
