WD2002: Table Style for Alignment in Right-to-Left Language Documents Reverses Left and Right (280573)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q280573

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Word features formatting support for languages that are written right-to-left, such as Arabic. However, the style definition for tables in documents and templates in which the language format uses the right-to-left orientation sets the alignment for tables as left-aligned, not right-aligned. An inserted table behaves correctly (for example, it is right-aligned), but the style definition for alignment appears to reverse left and right.

CAUSE

The Table Properties dialog box in the style definition uses "Left" to refer to "the beginning of the line," whether that is actually on the left side of the document (as in English U.S.) or on the right side of the document (as in Arabic).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
