Net Logon Dynamic DNS Registration Functionality Changes After Installing Windows 2000 SP1 (280439)

SUMMARY

After you install Window 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), when you use the Net Logon service, the dynamic Domain Name System (DNS) registration functionality may not work as expected.

Dynamic DNS updates for the Net Logon service may not function as expected if you use one or both of the following settings:
  • The Register this connection's addresses in DNS option on the Advanced TCP/IP Settings tab has been disabled.
  • The REG_DWORD value DisableDynamicUpdate in the following registry key is set to 0x1:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

If you use the preceding settings, you may experience the following behavior when you initiate dynamic updates for the Net Logon service:
  • In Windows 2000, A and PTR release records are no longer dynamically registered. However, SRV release records are still registered.
  • In Windows 2000 SP1, A, PTR, or SRV release records are not dynamically registered.
This behavior is by design.

After you install the service pack, if you want Windows 2000 to function as it did before you installed the service pack, follow these steps:
  1. Stop the Net Logon service. At a command prompt type net stop netlogon.
  2. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
  3. Locate and click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters

  4. Create a REG_DWORD value named DnsUpdateOnAllAdapters.
  5. Click DnsUpdateOnAllAdapters.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Modify, and then type 0x1.
  7. Start the NetLogon service. At a command prompt type net start netlogon.
