Exchange 2000 Server Exchange System Manager Cannot Open Public Folders (280437)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q280437

SYMPTOMS

If both Exchange 2000 Server and Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 are installed on the same computer, the Exchange 2000 Exchange System Manager may not display information for public folders.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because public folders cannot be opened if the Web Publishing service (W3svc) is not running. When ISA Server is installed, a message is displayed that states that Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) will be stopped. The Web Publishing service is stopped because it is part of IIS. Therefore, after you install ISA Server, the Exchange 2000 Exchange System Manager cannot open public folders. No message that indicates any problem is logged in the event log.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

  1. Start the Web Publishing service.
  2. Use Exchange System Manager to manage the public folder.
  3. Stop the Web Publishing service.

Method 2

Make sure that the ports that ISA Server normally listens on (TCP ports 80 and 8080 by default) are not used by any Web site in IIS. For more information about how to configure the Web Publishing service to work with ISA Server on the same computer, refer to the "ISA Server and IIS Server" section in ISA Server Help.
