SUMMARY

In the Windows 2000 Removable Storage tool, you can use a cleaning cartridge with a changer device. However, Removable Storage cannot differentiate between a standard cartridge and a cleaning cartridge when you inject a cartridge. When you want to clean the drive, do not inject a cleaner cartridge in the same manner as a typical cartridge. Instead, use the Cleaner Management Wizard.

Troubleshooting

If you inject a cleaning cartridge into a slot that is not yet reserved for it, the following two error messages are reported in the event log:
Event Source: ddsmc (in this case, the changer device is DDS Changer)
Event ID: 7
Description: The device, \Device\Changer0, has a bad block.

Event Source: Removable Storage Service
Event ID: 111
Description: RSM could not load media in drive Drive 0 of library XXXX
If this occurs, choose the magazine and remove the cleaning cartridge from the slot. Then set the magazine in the changer again. Removable Storage automatically configures it and synchronizes its database. Then, follow the steps in the "Summary" section to add the cleaning cartridge properly. If you do not, you may receive the following error message:
There was an error while adding a cleaning cartridge.
