SYMPTOMS

If you run the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) in Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5 or 2000, or in BackOffice Server 2000, and you select the Full-Time/Broadband Modem or Router option, you are prompted to provide a default gateway or router address. The ICW uses the value that you specify to set the default gateway for your external interface (for the Full-Time/Broadband Modem option) or as the default gateway for your internal interface (for the Router option). Any default gateway entries that you may have specified or set before you run the ICW are removed and replaced by the new address. If you had defined multiple default gateways, they are removed and replaced with the new value.

RESOLUTION

You can specify multiple gateways to take advantage of the Dead Gateway Detection feature. You can use Dead Gateway Detection to detect problems with the default gateway and to use a different gateway.

If you want to specify multiple gateways for an interface, you must add the additional gateways manually.

Small Business Server 2000 and BackOffice Server 2000

To add additional gateways:
  1. Double-click My Computer, double-click Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  2. Right-click the appropriate interface, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  4. Click Advanced.
  5. On the IP Settings tab, click Add under Default Gateways to add additional gateways.

Small Business Server 4.5

To add the additional gateways:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Networks.
  2. On the Protocols tab, click TCP/IP Protocol, and then click Properties.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Under Gateways, click Add to add additional gateways.
