SYMPTOMS

When you run the setup /forestprep command and try to join a server in the Exchange 5.5 organization, you may receive the following error message:
Setup encountered an error while attempting to bind to the Exchange server server name:0x80072027 (8231). The requested authentication method is not supported by the server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows NT Challenge/Response (NTLM) is not enabled as an authentication method on the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) protocol.

RESOLUTION

To enable Windows NT Challenge/Response authentication for the LDAP setting, follow these steps in the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program:
  1. Check the protocols container.
  2. Open the LDAP Protocol Property page.
  3. On the Authentication tab, click to select the Windows NT Challenge/Response check box, and then click OK.
  4. Stop and then restart the Exchange Server directory service.
  5. Run the setup/forestprep command again.
