PUB2002: Drop Caps from Word Web Pages Are Imported Incorrectly into Publisher (279375)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2002

This article was previously published under Q279375

SYMPTOMS

If you save a Microsoft Word document that contains drop cap formatting as a web page, and then open that web page by using Microsoft Publisher, the text that is formatted with drop caps may not appear correctly.

Specifically, the dropped cap may be imported within its own text box and in a location that is incorrect in relation to the paragraph.

CAUSE

The Publisher 2002 import filter for opening Word *.htm files cannot recognize drop-cap character formatting. Certain typographical enhancements to Word documents, such as the drop cap, are not retained when a document is saved as a web page (.htm or .html file) and then opened in Publisher. When the document is opened in Publisher, the drop cap is placed in a separate text box and no longer appears in the correct position.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, delete the extra text box, and recreate the drop cap in the Publisher text box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
