PUB: Some Custom Shape Objects Are Altered When You Open a Publication from an Earlier Version (279372)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2002
  • Microsoft Publisher 2000
  • Microsoft Publisher 98

This article was previously published under Q279372

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Publisher 98 file or a Microsoft Publisher 2000 file in Publisher 2002, Custom Shapes are converted to AutoShapes.

Some Custom Shapes have two handles that are used to adjust the height and width of the shape. These handles may be converted to a single handle in Publisher 2002.

For example, the converted version of the graph Custom Shape does not have a horizontal handle to add more data points along the x-axis.

CAUSE

Publisher 2002 uses objects called AutoShapes, instead of the Custom Shapes that were used in earlier versions of Publisher. This accounts for the discrepancies when the shapes are converted between AutoShapes and Custom Shapes.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The following Publisher 2000 Custom Shapes are affected by the conversion and may function differently in Publisher 2002:
  • graph
  • wide curve
  • up/down arrow
  • arrow
  • right curve arrow
  • 16-point star
  • 24-point star
  • pie
  • wavy banner
If you save your publication from Publisher 2002 back to the original file format, some Custom Shapes regain their handles, and others are converted to picture images and are no longer Custom Shapes.
