This article was previously published under Q279280 SYMPTOMS
If you use an administrative e-mail address that contains a period (or dot) in the name part of the address, the address may not be kept in the correct format when it is stored in the SOA record of a DNS zone.
CAUSE
The administrative e-mail address is stored in the RNAME field of the SOA record. The format of this entry is name.domain.tld. The first period is translated to an at sign (@), so the example listed above is translated to name@domain.tld.
If the name part of the e-mail address contains a period, as in First.Last@domain.tld, an escape character must be used for the first period. As per Request for Comments (RFC) 1035, the correct format is First\.Last.domain.tld. Windows 2000-based DNS servers do not store this format correctly.
