OL2000: Outlook 2000 Creates Larger Messages Than Outlook 98 When You Use the Same Custom Form (279213)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q279213

SYMPTOMS

A custom Outlook form may generate a saved message that is significantly larger in size when it is used with Outlook 2000. The same custom Outlook form may generate a smaller message size when it is used with Microsoft Outlook 98. The increase in size depends on the complexity of the custom Outlook form.

CAUSE

The increase in size is due to the saving of a stream property to the message. The stream property is loaded from the Outlook custom form, and incorrectly saved with the message by Outlook 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3).

MORE INFORMATION

The stream property that increases the message size is a named property. Named properties can display a different property ID in different Microsoft Exchange stores. In this case, the MDBVU32 program displays a different property ID depending on the store where the message is saved. You can determine the name to be 34112 (0x8540) by using the GetNamesFromID function in the MVBVU32 program. This name is consistent from store to store.

NOTE: While this problem occurs, the message class does not change back to the IPM.NOTE message class, but retains the custom message class. If the message class reverts back to the IPM.Note message class, the message is a one-off message and this property should be saved.
