OFF2000: Mail Tool in Control Panel Displays Question Marks After You Install Disc 2 of the MultiLanguage Pack (279144)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Disc 2 of the Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack, the label of the Mail tool in Control Panel changes to question marks. Two question marks (??) appear if you install Japanese, and three question marks (???) appear if you install Korean.

CAUSE

The Mail program is installed for each language when the Language Pack is installed. The registry value that points to the correct language is not reset until you run Microsoft Outlook 2000 for the first time.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Start Outlook 2000 for the first time.

Method 2

  1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Under Currently Installed Programs, click Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1.
  4. Click Change.
  5. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair Office.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
