PRB: Application Center 2000 Installation Fails with Wait Operation Timed Out When You Set MSDE Security (279099)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Application Center 2000, the installation may fail with a Windows Installer error 2501.1. The Application Center 2000 setup log file (Setup.log in the Winnt folder) contains the following error log entries:

MSI (s) (50:B8): Executing op: ActionStart(Name=SetMSDESecurity,,) Action 19:09:06: SetMSDESecurity.

MSI (s) (50:B8): Executing op: CustomActionSchedule(Action=SetMSDESecurity,ActionType=1025,Source=BinaryESec,Target=SetMSDESecurity,)

MSI (s) (50:B8): Creating MSIHANDLE (192) of type 790536 for thread 1464 Error 25011. An error occurred while performing the task.Error setting SQL Server 2000 Runtime (MSDE) security mode. 0x00000102 - The wait operation timed out.
Action ended 19:10:44: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.

CAUSE

This error appears to be a SQL 2000 Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) problem. This problem rarely occurs and the cause of the problem is not known.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, reinstall Application Center 2000.
