IGMP Router Changes Negative MFEs to Active and Forwards Packets Needlessly on Same LAN Segment (279096)

SYMPTOMS

When the recipient of multicast packets is on the same LAN segment as the sender of the multicast, the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) router changes the Negative multicast forwarding entries (MFE) to Active, causing the router to forward packets needlessly.

This behavior also creates duplicate packets on the local LAN, which will break any multicast audio or video application.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of a problem in the Rtm.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

NOTE: Replace the Rtm.dll file with the new version in both the Winnt\System32 folder and the Winnt\System32\Dllcache folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
