SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2, you may receive the following error message:
Font font name isn't found; using font name instead.
In addition, you may experience any of the following symptoms:
  • Fonts may not be displayed in the program.

  • Fonts may be displayed as symbols in the program.

  • Fonts may be distorted in the program.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if any of the following conditions are true:
  • The program is not properly installed.
  • The ttfCache file is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Uninstall Combat Flight Simulator 2

To uninstall Combat Flight Simulator 2:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Uninstall, and then click OK.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to uninstall Combat Flight Simulator 2.

Delete the Combat Flight Simulator 2 Folder

To delete the Combat Flight Simulator 2 folder:
  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

    In Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type combat flight simulator 2.
  3. In the Look in box, click My Computer.
  4. Make sure that the Include subfolders check box is selected.
  5. Click Find Now.
  6. Right-click the Combat Flight Simulator 2 folder, and then click Delete
  7. When you are prompted to confirm the folder deletion, click Yes.
  8. Close the Find: Files Named Combat Flight Simulator 2 window.

Clean Boot the Computer

To clean boot the computer, use the appropriate method for your version of Microsoft Windows.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

Microsoft Windows 98

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:

    • Process Config.sys File
    • Process Autoexec.bat File
    • Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
    • Process Win.ini File
    • Load Startup Group Items
  4. Click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

NOTE: To restore your original Startup options, click Normal Startup on the General tab in System Configuration Utility.

Microsoft Windows 95

  1. Restart the computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press the F8 key, and then select Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu.
  2. At the command prompt, type win, and then press ENTER. Press and hold down the SHIFT key until the Windows startup sequence is complete.
  3. Disable any anti-virus or disk tool programs installed on the computer.

  4. Quit all running programs except Explorer and Systray. To do this, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, click the program that you want to quit, and then click End Task. If you receive a message that the program is busy or not responding, click End Task again. Repeat this step to quit all programs except Explorer and Systray.

NOTE: To restore your original Startup options, restart the computer normally, and then enable any anti-virus or disk tool programs installed on the computer. For information about how to enable these programs, see the printed or online documentation for the program.

Reinstall Combat Flight Simulator 2 in a New Folder

  1. Insert the Combat Flight Simulator 2 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Install and then click Next.
  3. Click Customize installation options.
  4. Click to select the installation option that you want, and then click Change.
  5. In the Path box, delete the existing path, and then type the following line

    drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS2

    where drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which you want to install Combat Flight Simulator 2.
  6. Click OK. When you are prompted to create the folder, click Yes.
  7. Click OK, and then follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall Combat Flight Simulator 2.
If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Delete the ttfCache File

To delete the ttfCache file:
  1. Configure your computer to show hidden files. To do this, use the appropriate method for your operating system.

    Windows Millennium Edition

    1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
    2. Click the Tools tab, and then click Folder Options.
    3. Under Hidden Files or Folders, click Show hidden files or folders.
    4. Click OK.

    Windows 95 or Windows 98

    1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
    2. On the View menu, click Options or Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. Under Hidden Files, click Show all Files.
    5. Click OK.
  2. Locate the ttfCache file on your hard disk. To do this:
    1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

      In Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
    2. In the Named box, type ttfcache.
    3. In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
  3. In the list of found files, right-click the ttfCache file, and then click Delete.
  4. When you are prompted to confirm the file deletion, click Yes.
  5. Close the Find: Files Named ttfCache window.
  6. Restart the computer.
