PPT2002: Text Is Rotated Inside Object When Copied and Pasted to and from Word or Excel (278588)

SYMPTOMS

When you copy a shape containing rotated text from Microsoft PowerPoint 2002, and then paste the shape into Microsoft Word 2002, Microsoft Excel 2002, or Microsoft Publisher 2002, the text is no longer rotated.

Also, when you copy a shape that may not appear to contain rotated text from Excel or Word, and then paste the shape into PowerPoint, the text contained in the shape is unexpectedly rotated.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Excel, Publisher, and Word do not properly support the text rotation method used by PowerPoint.

For example, if text is inserted into a shape, and then the shape is rotated using PowerPoint, the text correctly appears rotated. However, when you copy and then paste that shape into Word, Publisher, or Excel, the rotated text no longer appears rotated.

However, when that same shape is copied back into PowerPoint, the text appears rotated again. The text is internally marked as rotated the entire time, but only PowerPoint interprets this information correctly.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:

Select the shape in PowerPoint, click Edit, and then click Copy.
Start the program in which you want to use the object, click Edit, and then click Paste Special.
Select the Picture option in the list, and then click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
