SUMMARY

This article describes shortcut keystrokes that you can use to group or ungroup objects in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.

MORE INFORMATION

When objects are grouped, you can treat all the objects in the group as a single object for many purposes. For example, you can flip, rotate, resize, and change the fill color of all the objects in a group as if they were only one object.

The shortcut key combination to group objects is CTRL+SHIFT+G.

The shortcut key combination to ungroup objects is CTRL+SHIFT+H.

To demonstrate the use of the shortcut keys, follow these steps:
  1. Start PowerPoint.
  2. Create a new, blank slide.
  3. On the Drawing toolbar, click Oval, and then place an oval anywhere on the slide.
  4. On the Drawing toolbar, click Rectangle, and then place a rectangle anywhere on the slide, but do not overlap the oval.
  5. Press and hold the CTRL key, and then select the oval and the rectangle.

Note the grab handles around each object.
  6. Press CTRL+SHIFT+G.

Note that grab handles now surround both objects as if they were one object.
  7. On the Drawing toolbar, click the arrow next to Fill Color.
  8. Select any color, and then click OK.

Note that the color changes for both objects.
  9. Click outside the objects so that the grab handles disappear.
  10. Click either object.

Note that the group grab handles appear.
  11. Click either object while the group grab handles are visible.

Note that grab handles appear around the object that you just clicked, and the object can now be modified independently.
  12. Press CTRL+SHIFT+H.

Note that the objects are now ungrouped.
