PPT2002: Slide Show OLE Object Opens on First Monitor Instead of on Presentation Monitor (278568)

SYMPTOMS

When you set up a presentation containing an OLE object to run on a second monitor, when you view the slide show, and then click the object on the second monitor to open the object, the object opens (using the associated program) on the first monitor instead of on the second (presentation) monitor as expected.

For example, if you set up a presentation containing a Microsoft Excel worksheet to run on a second monitor, and you view the slide show and then click the worksheet on the second monitor to open the worksheet in Excel, Excel opens the worksheet on the first monitor instead of on the second (presentation) monitor.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, drag the object window to the second monitor, and then save the presentation. PowerPoint remembers this location, and the next time that you run the slide show and click the object on the second monitor to open the object (using the associated program), the object opens on the second (presentation) monitor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Set Up a Presentation to Run on a Second Monitor

You must use a Microsoft Windows 98-, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-, or Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer and have dual-monitor hardware installed to use this procedure. Use this procedure to run a slide show on the full screen of a secondary monitor while you view the Presenter Tools on the primary monitor.
  1. On the Slide Show menu, click Set Up Show.
  2. Click to select the Show Presenter View check box.
  3. In the Display slide show on list, click the monitor that you want the slide show to appear on, and then click OK.
Now when you run your slide show presentation, you have your own view, a view not visible to your audience. This view allows you to do the following:
  • See what bullet or slide is coming next.
  • Pause the show by replacing the show with a black screen.
  • See a list of keyboard shortcuts.
  • Jump directly to any slide.
  • Read or edit your speaker notes.
  • End the slide show.
