PPT2002: Inserting Symbol Does Not Trigger the Selection Change Event (278562)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2002
This article was previously published under Q278562 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft PowerPoint 2002, when you create a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro that is supposed to run anytime a change is made to a presentation, the macro does not run when a symbol is inserted.
While the Symbol dialog box is visible, the event handler does not detect the insertion of one of more symbols. But, as soon as you close the Symbol dialog box, the event fires.
This behavior is different from versions of PowerPoint earlier than PowerPoint 2002, and the behavior is different from other Microsoft Office XP programs.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because the Symbol dialog box is modal to PowerPoint, so PowerPoint does not see inserting a symbol as a PowerPoint selection change event.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, you can insert symbols using keyboard shortcuts, for example, ALT+0128 for the euro sign, or you can insert symbols using the Windows character map. Either of these actions will trigger a selection change event.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
