Excel objects pasted in HTML format do not appear with gridlines (278554)

SYMPTOMS

When you create a Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentation and use the Paste Special command and the HTML Format option to copy an object or range of cells from a Microsoft Excel worksheet, the object or range of cells may not appear with gridlines on the PowerPoint slide.

This behavior can occur even when the Gridlines check box is selected in the Excel Page Setup dialog box.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the gridlines exist only in the print settings of the Excel worksheet. Print settings are not copied to PowerPoint when you use the HTML Format option.

WORKAROUND

For PowerPoint 2003 and for PowerPoint 2002

To work around this issue, you can add borders to the selected range of cells, and then use the Paste Special command to copy the object in HTML format to PowerPoint. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Excel.
  2. Create the following spreadsheet:
       A1:   1
   A2:   2
   A3:   3
   A4:   4
  3. Select a range of cells that includes the data.
  4. On the Format menu, click Cells.
  5. In the Format Cells dialog box, click the Border tab.
  6. On the Border tab, click the Inside and Outline buttons, and then click OK.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  8. Start PowerPoint.
  9. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
  10. In the Paste Special dialog box, double-click HTML Format. The border lines appear along with the data on the PowerPoint slide.
