OL2002: Message to Contacts on Imported Distribution List Generates NDRs After Upgrade from Outlook 2000 (278193)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q278193

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Outlook 2002 from Microsoft Outlook 2000, contacts who have no e-mail address may show "Full Name (E-mail)" as a display name. Also, when you send a message to members of an Outlook 2000 distribution list that is now in Outlook 2002, you may receive a non-delivery report (NDR) for some contacts.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Outlook 2000 distribution lists can include contacts who do not have e-mail addresses. When Outlook 2002 imports such a list, and then you send a message to members of the list, Outlook 2002 generates an NDR for any contact for whom it cannot resolve an address.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, review the distribution lists in Contacts and remove any contact who has no associated e-mail address.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
