"Error 5 Access Denied" Error Message When a Program Tries to Alter Last Access and Creation Time (277628)

SYMPTOMS

MS-DOS-based and 16-bit Windows-based programs have the ability to update the last access and creation time for files and folders by using DOS Interrupt 21 function 7143 sub-functions 5 and 7. Occasionally, while this procedure is being attempted, an "error 5 (access denied)" error message is reported back to the program.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem and update the last access time and creation time for files, use the file handle-based function instead; Interrupt 21 function 5705 for last access date and time, and function 5707 for creation date and time. Note that it is not possible to update folder dates and times by using these functions.
