The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2002

This article was previously published under Q277602

SYMPTOMS

When you break a link to an object from within a shared workbook, the link is still displayed in the Source list in the Edit Links dialog box of that same shared workbook.

When you insert an object that is linked to a data source in another workbook into a shared workbook, and then break the link to that object from another instance of that shared workbook, the following behavior occurs:
  • The link is broken in the workbook, and the source object is no longer displayed in the Source list in the Edit Links dialog box.
  • When you save and close the workbook, and then open the workbook again, you no longer receive the Update Links message.
  • The formerly linked object still appears in the Source list in the Edit Links dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, break the link in the other instance of the shared workbook. To do this, follow these steps:

NOTE: To ensure that the links are deleted properly, make sure that no other users have the shared Excel file open while you perform these steps.
  1. On the Edit menu, click Links.
  2. Click Break Link, and then click Break Links in the Microsoft Excel message box that appears.
  3. Click Close.
  4. On the File menu, click Save.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
