IBM ThinkPad 600E Does Not Resume from Suspend Mode When the Battery Is Removed (276414)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q276414

SYMPTOMS

Your laptop is in Suspend mode and you remove its battery (an AC power source). When you attempt to resume the operations of the laptop by removing the laptop from its Suspend mode, the system may stop responding and a blinking cursor is displayed on a black screen.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you remove the laptop's battery while the laptop is in Suspend mode. It occurs because the laptop's system is waiting for a state to be returned from the battery. The No Battery state is not correctly recognized by the laptop's system when the system attempts to return from its Suspend mode.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must turn off the laptop.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If you remove the battery while the laptop is turned off or in Hibernation mode, this behavior does not occur.

This behavior has been observed on IBM ThinkPad 600E, although it may occur on other models as well. The removal of the laptop's battery while it is in Suspend mode is not supported on these laptops. Battery replacement must be performed while the laptop is turned off, either with its power source completely turned off or when the laptop is in Hibernation mode.
