ENT2001: Entourage Stops Responding When You Try to Receive Mail (276358)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Entourage 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q276358

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to receive messages with Entourage after you import information that includes rules from Microsoft Outlook Express for the Macintosh, your computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

One of the imported rules contains more than 10 criteria. Unlike Outlook Express, Entourage does not allow more than 10 criteria.

WORKAROUND

Remove criteria from the rule so that the total of all criteria is less than 10.

MORE INFORMATION

The behavior described in the "Symptoms" section may also occur under the following conditions:
  • You define a Custom View that contains more than 10 criteria.
  • You run an Advanced Find procedure that contains more than 10 criteria.
  • You run a Find Related Items command from a Contact that has more than five e-mail addresses.

Maintaining Criteria in Separate Rules

In some cases, you may require all of the criteria in a rule that has more than 10 criteria. To preserve these criteria, you can distribute the criteria between two rules. To build two rules from the original rule:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Rules.
  2. In Rules, click the rule that contains more than 10 criteria.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Duplicate Rule.
  4. Double-click each rule in turn, and then distribute the criteria between each rule so that each rule is unique, but all of the original criteria is preserved. If you want, rename the duplicate rule by typing a new descriptive name in the Rule Name box.
The two rules will be evaluated separately without exceeding the criteria limit.
